DESCRIPTION
Janelle VerMaas was a lifelong resident of Lexington from the age of three until she passed on June 18, 2015, at the age of 60. Janelle attended Pershing Elementary, St. Ann’s High School, the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, and Kearney State College. She continued her education at the University of Nebraska at Kearney, where she received her Master’s degree. Janelle student taught at Pershing Elementary and went on to teach the majority of her 33-year career there, teaching mostly kindergarten. Throughout the years, she taught students K-12 and some college classes.

Janelle had the unbelievable ability to reach her students in the learning process. Her positive attitude and energy level were never faltering, even after she was stricken with cancer. She never stopped learning and teaching what she had learned. Janelle not only taught and touched the hearts of thousands of children but also hundreds of adults too.

The family of Janelle VerMaas has created this scholarship in her memory because of her devotion to teaching everyone she came in contact with. The JANELLE VERMAAS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP is available to any graduating senior at Lexington High School who is enrolled at any university or college and plans to pursue a degree in education. The Lexington Community Foundation will award a $2,000 scholarship each year to a qualified applicant payable $500 per semester beginning their sophomore year.

QUALIFICATIONS
Consideration for the scholarship may be awarded only to a Lexington High School graduate pursuing a degree in education. Precedence will be given to those who were her former students.

Funds will be sent to the Office of Financial Aid and the student’s school of choice. Additional requirements may be needed for payment.
